CivTech Sprint 1 – Ethical AI Police Scotland

How can technology be used to develop ethical artificial intelligence solutions for the public sector?

What is the open innovation challenge?

Scotland aspires to be a recognised leader in the development and adoption of artificial intelligence (AI) as a trusted, responsible and ethical tool to benefit people. For this to be achieved, particularly in the delivery of public services, it's crucial that the cause of the decisions made or supported by AI systems are explainable.

This challenge aims to tackle the broad strategic issue of how to develop ethical, explainable approaches to the use of AI in the public sector in a scalable repeatable way.

Given the potential scope and variability of such a challenge, the Scottish Government has partnered with Police Scotland to provide a specific initial "use case" for challenge respondents.

In CivTech’s sprints, three companies will be selected to participate in an Exploration Stage. Contracts for this will be of £5,000 (inc. VAT) each.

A single company will subsequently be selected from the Exploration Stage participants to progress to Development Stage. This is to develop a minimum viable product. The contract for the Development Stage will be of £25,000 (inc. VAT).
