DASA advancing less lethal weapons

Defence and Security Accelerator (DASA) is seeking innovative solutions backed by £500,000 funding to safely prevent conflict scalation from a distance.

What's the open innovation challenge?

The Defence and Security Accelerator (DASA) is seeking proposals for innovative technologies to provide the police and law enforcement officers with new less lethal weapons options to manage violence and conflict across a broad range of operational scenarios.

Some example technologies may include:

  • Acoustic
  • Chemical irritant
  • Directed energy
  • Drone based
  • Electrical
  • Kinetic energy

Note the list is not exhaustive and any technique or technology could be considered.

The current call is for phase 1 of a 2-phased competition. The total funding available to phase 1 is £500,000 (ex. VAT). This is to fund up to 9 projects running between December 2020 and March 2021 to demonstrate either proof of concept or prototype demonstration.

Timeline

  • Dial in session: 9 September 2020
  • One-to-one teleconference sessions: 9 and 24 September 2020
  • Cyber risk assessment completion by: 15 October 2020, midday BST
  • Competition closes: 15 October 2020, midday BST
  • Feedback release: 4 December 2020
  • Contracting: December 2021 to March 2021
