Decommissioning of energy assets

The European Space Agency invites tenders that assess the feasibility of satellite-based services in support of decommissioning of energy assets.

What's the open innovation challenge?

Oil and gas decommissioning activities are ramping up worldwide, due to installations from the 1970s reaching the end of their life. Given the potential impact upon the environment from these activities, the European Space Agency (ESA) intends to launch a new invitation to tender to assess the technical and commercial feasibility of satellite-based services in support of decommissioning of energy assets.

ESA Space Solutions intends to offer 100% funding for feasibility studies of up to €200k. Applicable funding level is subject to authorisation by the relevant national delegation. Bidders are requested to obtain evidence in the form of a letter of authorisation by their respective delegations before submitting a proposal.

Key focus areas

  • Monitoring environmental impact
  • Supporting waste management processes
  • End-to-end business support services
  • Supporting the automation of decommissioning activities
  • Using innovative space-enabled technology to support logistics and ensure safety of onshore and offshore operations

Any resulting studies are intended to establish the roadmap towards service implementation through follow-on demonstration projects.
