Gelatin-Based Enteric Capsules

Gelatin-based solutions required for targeted healthcare and enteric release.

What is the open innovation challenge?

Today the administration of drugs is evolving towards a personalized approach. In addition to having more efficient control of the activity and the effect of the drugs, a targeted release is emphasized. Therefore, the Seeker desires innovative gelatin-based formulations for producing enteric capsules.

Although certain ingredients need to become activated in the stomach, other ingredients must pass through the stomach before being activated in the intestines. Currently, gelatin-based capsules dissolve quickly in the acidic/enzymatic conditions of the stomach. To prevent this from happening, an enteric coating is applied to the capsule, altering the dissolution characteristics, thus allowing the capsule to transit the stomach without releasing the drug or nutraceutical. The Seeker is interested in gelatin-based solutions that eliminate the coating step, while maintaining enteric release.

This is a Theoretical Challenge that requires only a written proposal to be submitted. The Challenge award will be contingent upon theoretical evaluation of the proposal by the Seeker.

Submissions to this Challenge must be received by 11:59 PM (US Eastern Time) on 12 March 2021.

Late submissions will not be considered.
