Support HS2 through innovation in construction and design.

What is the open innovation challenge?

Through this SBRI competition, High Speed Two (HS2) Ltd is seeking innovations that will drive project efficiencies and process optimisations during the design and construction phase of High Speed 2.

Key themes are:

  • reducing manual operations
  • project interfaces
  • waste in construction
  • recruitment and onboarding
  • procurement loss prevention

This is Phase 1 of a potential 2-phase competition. A decision to proceed with Phase 2 will depend on the outcomes of Phase 1. Only successful applicants from Phase 1 will be invited to apply to take part in phase 2.

The first phase involves Research & Development contracts being awarded to demonstrate technical feasibility of the proposed solution and the viability and desirability for the HS2 project. A total of up to £300,000, (inc. VAT), is allocated to this phase.

Phase 1 contracts will be up to £30,000 (Inc. VAT). This is for each project for up to 3 months. Successful Phase 1 projects must commence delivery by 1 March 2021 and complete by end of May 2021.

If HS2 decides to run a Phase 2, it will include prototyping, demonstrating, piloting, testing and validation of new or improved products, processes, or services in environments representative of real-life operating conditions. The primary objective will be to make further technical improvements on products, processes or services that are not substantially set over a 12-month period.

It is anticipated that up to five Phase 2 contracts will be awarded to businesses chosen from the successful Phase 1 applicants.

Each Phase 2 contract will be up to £250,000 (Inc. VAT).
