The Sustainable Innovation Fund - SBRI phase 1

£10 million SBRI phase 1 competition to help recover from COVID-19 in a sustainable manner.

What's the open innovation challenge?

Innovate UK is seeking to fund solutions to help businesses and/or the public sector in the UK recover from the coronavirus pandemic in a sustainable manner, demonstrating the impacts and potential of a clean growth led recovery and transition to net zero.

This is phase 1 of a 2-phase competition. Phase 1 will focus on exploring feasibility of the proposed solutions, while phase 2 will focus on follow-on R&D and field testing. A decision to proceed with phase 2 will depend on the outcomes of phase 1.

A total of £10 million (inc. VAT) has been allocated at phase 1 of the competition. It is anticipated that phase 1 contracts will be up to £60,000 each, for up to 3 months.

Phase 2 contracts will be selected competitively. Only successful applicants from phase 1 will be eligible for phase 2 funding. The funds allocated to phase 2 total £70 million (inc. VAT). Innovate UK anticipates phase 2 contracts of 12 months duration, up to a maximum value of £3 million (inc VAT) each.

Successful projects may be required to demonstrate progress as part of a showcase at the UN climate change COP26 in November 2021.
